Adam Stott: Hey everybody. Welcome back to business growth secrets. And today this is going to be a me and you private chat episode where I talk to you about some of the cool things that we’ve got going on within my businesses, moves we’re making, strategic moves we’re making. And I’m going to talk to you about some actually of my new year goals, some new year’s resolution goals.
[00:00:26] I’ve made. I’m super excited about and actually can add a lot of value to you. So the first one that I wanted to talk about is this. In fact, there’s rewind a little bit and let’s just talk about new year’s goals and you know, goals that you set and put in play. So for every single new year. I always set out some new goals for the year that I’m gonna put in play, and I’ve got a really great track record of being able to complete these goals, these targets, ambitions that I set out for every single new year.
[00:00:59] And there’s a reason I’ve got a really good track record. track record is the way that I set these goals out is I don’t set them out in a traditional way. And I think that’s where a lot of people fail with their goal setting is when they set a goal, they go, Oh, you know, I want to get fit, um, for the new year.
[00:01:16] I want to build my business. I want to, you know, do a million pound in revenue. They set a goal, they write it down. It’s new year, new me mentality. And then it doesn’t come true. Um, because the focus is So we really want to prepare our focus when setting goals for the new year or setting goals at any point in time.
[00:01:35] So the first thing is we really should start considering these, and I’ll give you my process. So this process can help you. Um, and you can start to, if you haven’t already put some of these goals in place, and then I’ll tell you about a couple of the goals, uh, two specifically I’ll talk about that I set, and then I’ll tell you how we’re going to accomplish them and break it down.
[00:01:54] Right? So first things first, when I do it, for new year. I’m always looking at them in November, beginning in December. So I’m doing some thinking time in November and December about the new year. I’m usually every year having a sit down meeting with my coaches. Uh, so I’ve been working with Sarah and Michael as my coaches.
[00:02:19] Many of you I’ve talked about it prior before, you know, Sarah X dragon, Michael, invested into multiple businesses, amazing, amazing coaches. And I would sit down with them and, and often working with people like Damien and Jim as well, who incredible sit down and I’ll be saying, right, okay, what is the best use of time?
[00:02:40] What are the biggest things that I want to achieve over the course of the next year? Start doing that in November, refining that up in December. And I make sure that before we get to the new year, they are fully written down, They are broken down. They’re devised. They’re ready to go. Now you’re listening to this in January, so you might not have done that.
[00:03:00] But even if you have, that’s okay. If you haven’t done that, and you haven’t set some New Year’s goals and some goals for this year, this is going to be useful to you. When do you think would now would be a good time to start? Absolutely. Now would be a good time to start. So we want to we want to be doing this right now.
[00:03:15] So what do we do? First things first, I’m looking at no more than five objectives for the year, and there are five big things, five big needle movers that I want to achieve over the course of the year, um, that are going to move the needle in my business or in my personal life. Um, and I break them down. So this is an important part as well.
[00:03:39] I’ll have 3 to 5 for business, and then I’ll have 3 to 5 for personal. So I break those into two. So that’s like your step one. Um, you’ve got your personal goals. You got your business goals, and I break those down. The reason that’s really important is because you want to achieve a balanced life. You want financial success.
[00:03:59] You want to feel like you’re growing in your businesses and the things that you’re doing. But you also want to feel like, you know, you’re making the most out of your life. You’re enjoying your life. You’re doing really cool things. So you’ve got your, your personal goals and then you’ve got your business goals.
[00:04:13] The reason that you do three to five and not 10, 15, 20 is because people just end up making a big long to do list. And then all of a sudden it feels overwhelming. Some of them make a difference. Some of them don’t make a difference. So we want to minimize that down. And go with a maximum of three to five in each category.
[00:04:34] And frankly, often for me, there’s just three in each category, three huge business goals and three huge personal goals that we want to set out for the year. Then we look at the structure of how we set those goals. So the structure. Is what we look at is we look at what’s called an OKR. So we say, what is the objective?
[00:04:58] What is the objective that I want to achieve with this specific goal? Um, so I’ll give you a couple of them now. I’ll run these through. So one of the things that I want to achieve this year is we haven’t put a lot of time into it. In the past, but we’re putting more time into this year is I really YouTube channel.
[00:05:18] So put that objective is breakthrough on the YouTube channel. But what would be the problem there? Well, there’s no measurement. I can’t measure whether I did it or whether I didn’t. And nobody wants to move in target. We’re going to shoot the arrow at the target. We can’t keep moving the target as we’re shooting the arrow.
[00:05:35] Otherwise, we’ll never get to where we want to get to. So what we have to do is we have to say, Hey, The objective loosely is that I want to break through on YouTube. What does breaking through look like? What does that actually look like to have a big breakthrough in this channel this year? And then we can become more specific.
[00:05:55] So for me, the beginning of the year, we’re at 25, 000 subscribers. We want to hit a minimum as of 100, 000 subscribers on that YouTube channel this year. And what that does is that makes it now measurable. It’s specific. So this is your, your smart goals is, uh, is specific, is measurable, it’s actionable, and we can actually measure whether we achieve that goal or not.
[00:06:23] So 100, 000. YouTube subscribers and we want this YouTube so we don’t just want subscribers for subscribers sakes We want that to turn into a lead machine So we’ll turn that into a a goal that not only achieves 100 000 subscribers, but we also want to achieve and generate a minimum of 2000 organic leads from that channel across the course of the 12 months.
[00:06:53] So, you know, we currently the business with ads and, you know, with the business and the database got quarter of a million people on the database got very large database. You know, we’re generating Four, 5,000 new leads per month. So 2000 leads over the course of a a year from a YouTube channel is not a, you know, it’s not huge.
[00:07:13] And 25,000 to a hundred thousand is not huge either. So when we look at this, well, why are we doing it? Why are we not making these goals like ridiculous? Well, first of all, I said, well, I’m going to do a million YouTube followers and I’m going to generate 10, 000 leads a month. All of a sudden, the goal is too far away.
[00:07:34] And look in five years time, you know, we, or it might not even be five years in two, three years, we might reassess in a year’s time and say, well, one of the goals last year was to get a hundred thousand followers and 2000 leads. So this year we’re actually, now we know it better. Um, we’ve understood the algorithm better.
[00:07:51] We’ve got a better process. Let’s go from 100, 000 to 500, 000. Let’s go from 2000 leads to 10, 000 leads. And we’re stretching the target up because we understand that business growth is a journey and you should too. That can really help you to understand that. So. That’s the mentality that we’re going to have when, when setting this goal and obviously got lots of lots of different ones that we’re working on.
[00:08:13] This is just one of the ones in business. That’s a marketing goal. So now we’ve got the objective, 100, 000 subscribers, 2000 leads. The objective is a slight stretch, but it’s not ridiculous. So it’s achievable, right? Which is really cool. And now what we do is we break it down. So this is, you got the O, which is what’s the objective.
[00:08:34] Great. That’s ticked off. Now you want your your key results. So what would a key result be of 100, 000 and 2000 new leads across the year? Well, the first key result would be that we go from, you know, generating X amount of leads from that channel now to 100 leads per month. So we could have that as a small key result.
[00:08:57] That’s where we want to get to. We can then say, Okay, when we hit 500 new leads from that channel, Um, channel. That’s a key result. When we hit 1000 leads, that’s a key result. 1500 leads, 2000 leads. That’s a key result. So we’ve got a number of key results there. And then we would attribute a time to that.
[00:09:15] So we’d say, okay, 100 leads. When do we want to do that? We want to do that by the end of January. Okay. We say, okay, well, 500 leads. When do we want to do that? We want to do that by the end of quarter one. And then we say, well, 1000 leads. do that by the end of quarter two. 1500 leads end of quarter three and 2000 leads by end of quarter four.
[00:09:33] And now we’ve got really, really specific measurable key result targets with an objective in mind, a top line objective so we can help to achieve it. And then what do we do? We go, okay, well, the 100, 000 subscribers, so we now need to do the same plan for the 100, 000 subscribers. So what we’ve got, we’ve not got just the New Year’s resolution, we’ve got a specific measurable, actionable objective with key result measuring towards its completion.
[00:10:00] And some people go, well, bloody hell, that sounds like a lot of work, Adam. Sounds like a lot of work. And this is why I say that, you know, you do this kind of thing, uh, prior to coming into January, but actually it’s not a lot of work. Doing this for three big goals for your business and three big goals for your personal life is actually pretty straightforward.
[00:10:21] And this is the really cool thing. This is how you can get every single thing you want out of life done. Everything you want just comes with the correct preparation, the correct strategies, the correct planning, and that’s what drives you towards you achieving all of your goals and all of your results.
[00:10:39] So what then we do next is we look at the personal ones. We’ve got the three business ones and you know, obviously we’ve got high level revenue target we’re looking to achieve and EBITDA and profit. That’s one of those goals for the business. We’ve got marketing goals for the business, just much like I’ve just said to you.
[00:10:56] Okay. We’re also hosting a huge event this year called Business Mania. Um, that’s another one. And maybe we’ll talk on a future podcast episode about how we break that down. And then you’ve got your personal one. So one of the ones of personal that I wanted to do is I wanted to get fit. I made that specific and measurable.
[00:11:15] By putting a weight allowance onto that, I then also said that I want to go to the gym twice per week, every single week. So then what I did is I, that’s the objective. Then I took the key results as well. I need to complete 104 gym sessions this year, and then I built those 104 gym sessions out and I ticked them off as I go.
[00:11:35] And this is how you can just get anything you want in life. So I wanted to spend a little bit of time talking to you today about goal setting, how you can use goal setting, uh, prepare yourself for new goals. And hopefully, you know, you can start to apply this to the way that you Set goals because too many people set very loose goals.
[00:11:59] They’re not very clear on their objectives. They run around in different directions, you know, with good meaning, good intention, but don’t get what they want because they don’t follow a plan and a process. This can give you a plan. This can give you a process. So quick recap before we finish up is this.
[00:12:14] Make sure that your goals are specific, i. e. you can measure them. You know that you can measure them. You can measure the outcome. Did you do it? Did you not do it? Make sure you can follow it along. It’s simple. It’s actionable. Make sure you don’t set too many goals and make sure the goals you do set are a stretch, but they’re not too far out of your, you know, Your sphere of influence that you can actually complete them and get them done.
[00:12:39] So I think there’s a ton here for you to, to learn from and, you know, feast on and hopefully improve the way you set your goals. I would love to hear from you. Oh, by the way. While we’re on the goals, if you haven’t gone over to the YouTube channel, um, this is a pocket. This what you listen to right now is podcast exclusive.
[00:12:57] So this isn’t a video. I’m just doing is an audio because we do a lot of that on the podcast. But if you like to look at the visuals and you like to see, you know, different diagrams, drawing out education, a lot of that stuff is going on the YouTube channel. So it’d be really cool. If you can subscribe to that channel, uh, and drop a comment, tell us that, Hey, I, you know, I was listening to the podcast.
