We’ve had an amazing time so far. He’s entered one of our awards for the Excellence Award in our Branded Award Ceremony and he’s been able to go and secure that because he demonstrated within his business, the business that they’ve been running, the excellence in terms of looking after so many clients and doing a great, great job. First of all, how are you feeling? You feeling good?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
There’s no words that can describe my feeling. It’s been absolutely phenomenal to be here and accept this award. Yeah, I’m speechless really.
Adam Stott:
Yeah, absolutely. It’s been a brilliant experience, isn’t it? How have you found it so far here with everyone here? You’ve been enjoying it, you made some great friends, had a great time?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
It’s been an amazing community and to be, to have met so many wonderful people has been.
Adam Stott:
Some great businesses here, isn’t there, right? Great, great, great, great people. And look, you’re running this business, I know that your dad’s very involved in the business as well. You run it together. It’s a family business. You’ve achieved some great things. Tell us a little bit about the business and tell us what the business does so anyone watching understands exactly what you do and what the business is all about.
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yeah, sure. So, our company is called Britway Airport Transfer and we run, we’ll provide airport transfer services to accommodate everyone’s needs from the basic saloon car to coach fires and we also do tours and sea transfers and a lot of things really.
Adam Stott:
And how long has the business been running now?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
About three years since we’ve restarted since COVID.
Adam Stott:
Yeah.
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
At that point I wasn’t, I had not much involvement in fact until recently because yeah, my father was working on it continuously at that point and then only recently have I had the opportunity to have more input as becoming a partner with him.
Adam Stott:
Yeah. And what’s that been like? You know, you said, obviously, there was obviously some struggles in that industry in COVID. You’ve bounced back, you’ve become involved in the business, probably brought a modern set of eyes to it. What are some of the struggles been and what are some of the things that you’ve done to push that business forward?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yeah, there were many, many struggles, especially during COVID. We were at the point where we were thinking of completely letting go, honestly, since there were hardly anyone that we could offer the services to besides the key workers, the very few key workers that were permitted to go out during the tough restrictions. And we had to, it was difficult to find drivers who were happy to take that risk and take passengers and also provide them with an exceptional service under the circumstances. So there was a lot on the line for us as a company, and we had to get through that and push through that very difficult time , for two years, and…
Adam Stott:
What kept you going through those struggles? You know, you’ve got a business and what I love about having these kind of conversations with business owners that have been through the ups and downs is a lot of people watch these and really can take some inspiration in those moments where you feel like you haven’t got a business. You’ve worked hard to start a business, build a business, get customers, get clients, and then it’s ripped away from you and all of a sudden there’s no one to serve. You’ve got no opportunity and you’re panicking and you’re in that moment. What happens to your mind? How did you get yourself? How did you keep yourself going? What was that mindset? And how did you and your dad look to rebuild?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
I’ll tell you what it was. My father, I mean, my father and I did not want to go back to how things were before. Him working constantly, 24/7, long hours, having had done multiple businesses and not them not succeeding. And we did not want to go back to that no matter what and we we realized we had to, it was a necessity that we were to push through this very difficult time and succeed. And that’s the one thing that really kept us going and yeah, I think having that family bond really pushed us.
Adam Stott:
So the family bond, the drive, the determination, and actually being motivated by the pain is what I’m hearing, right? And try and interpret that for people that are watching. The reason I’m interpreting that is because sometimes, when you got a lot of pain in the past, people can let that pain on them rather than using it to drive them, you know. Excuse the pun as a driving company, but you’ve used it to drive you forward. So where are we now? What happened after this period of time? You’ve obviously started to rebuild. What sort of happened next and you get back on track and what’s been happening in the business?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yeah. So fast forward three years later and we’re a much better position than we were then. We’ve been able to provide services to over 3, 000 clients on a yearly basis and provide, we have a much larger set of drivers and we’re providing services to companies that we never thought we could ever achieve really. And it was a journey, really, that started from zero to now this.
Adam Stott:
Yeah, and you built the business. The business now is a seven figure business, right? You built that up successfully. You worked really, really hard. You came and met us for the first time. I think you came down to our offices, spent a couple of days with us. What is it you’ve noticed about working with us or the team? Is there someone in the team that’s made a particular impact on you? Is there some different strategies? Just, if you could share with the audience, what are some of the things that’s helped you move forward even more since we’ve sort of started working together?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yeah, I’ll be really honest. So the first event that we went to, I, at the start of the event, I was very demotivated, honestly, as I’ve been working for my dad for some time and I really didn’t think it was, I didn’t really have the push that I had after attending the event. I realized that, and my father really realized that things have changed completely with my passion and drive for the business for it to go somewhere. And I think that the individuals that I met, including yourself, Adam, and Ross, as well as Nick, they all really pushed me to motivated me to believe that what I had, what we had as a business was something that was going somewhere. And that could be very successful with the right support.
Adam Stott:
Yeah. And that’s incredible, right? Because if you, a lot of the time business can be a lonely place, right? We can move into these moments where we lose some motivation but actually just getting that spark back, sometimes there’s enough to just drive you forward and start driving and moving forward into into the right areas. And I think it’s awesome. I think it’s awesome that we’ve helped you get that motivation back on. Also, while you’re here, you’re getting featured in the media, you’re winning awards. You’ve had a great time. I’ve seen you really getting to know people in the room. What was it like in the spa? Did you enjoy that as well? You know?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
It was very relaxing and I was in a very relaxed environment the entire time so it didn’t really feel like I was in a place that I was improving or excelling and work, you know. I didn’t feel like I was under any pressure.
Adam Stott:
Yeah. Has it been nice to have a break?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yeah. Yeah. It’s been absolutely fantastic.
Adam Stott:
Brilliant. And get some great results as well. Well, look, you know, obviously the business is going places now. You’ve rebuilt, you’ve got to a great place. What’s next? What’s your vision of the future now? How are you seeing things differently in your mind?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
So, currently we’re UK based, but I have a vision that we’ll go further than that and we will be able to go global and provide new services as well and not just airport transfer services, it could be tours in other countries. I’m originally Sri Lankan, so it could be something to do with Sri Lanka. Yeah, so there’s a lot of ideas.
Adam Stott:
So your vision is growing. Yeah?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yes, it’s growing a lot.
Adam Stott:
And for those that are watching, because this is really important, is, you know, fears and beliefs when it comes to business owners, business owners have a lot of fears and no doubt from what you said to me, you might have experienced some fears along the way or had some limiting beliefs, what, in your mind, you’re out the other side now. You’ve gone through some ups and downs. You’re now succeeding. The business is a seven figure business. You know, you broke through that barrier. You serve 3000 clients. You’re doing a great job. You’re working closely with your dad. You’ve got new ideas, new vision that you’re bringing in. But what were some of the fears that business owners need to get rid of, eliminate, and what beliefs, you know, for you are important for business owners to move forward and succeed?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yeah, so the main fear, the fear that we had at the start was the fear of competition. I mean, it’s a really competitive market, isn’t it?
Adam Stott:
Yeah.
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
We’ve got several competitors in this type of market. Also, the fear of succeeding, that’s something that people often forget about and don’t really think of as a fear. Because you’ll succeed to a certain level and you’ll wonder, oh, well, where do I go from there? Have I really achieved something? You know? So, those are the two common fears that I think that we faced.
Adam Stott:
Yeah.
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
And I think several others may be going through that.
Adam Stott:
Yeah.
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
And…
Adam Stott:
And now you, how do you feel about those fears now?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
I feel like those fears are not even in my mind. They’ve completely been erased because it’s the mindset really that has just come about being motivated by the success that we’ve had. And that’s just completely eliminated and I’m really passionate about the business that we have and I’m, I know that I can see, succeed. It’s not even a fear of mine.
Adam Stott:
And that’s a great place to be because you’re tapping into that power and driving it forward without fear, which is awesome and I think you should, you know, be proud of yourself for that. And what about the beliefs? What are some of the beliefs that you feel the business owners need to let go of? Was there a belief in the past? You maybe was like I believe that, you know, we’re not going to succeed in this market, or I believe is this the right business model? Any belief that you had, that’s now changed? Is there something like that for you?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yeah, like I mentioned as well previously about the COVID situation, we were really about to let go, like completely. And we really felt like we, it was not going anywhere. And I think coming from that sort of position where you’re almost letting go of your beliefs of succeeding, and somehow managing to push through, I think, gives you that comfort and, not comfort.
Adam Stott:
Confidence.
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Confidence is the word.
Adam Stott:
Yeah.
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yes. Yeah.
Adam Stott:
Confidence. So what do you believe now?
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
I believe that if I can go through that, what’s stopping me to go to…
Adam Stott:
The next level next level.
Amintha Malmalabaduge:
Yeah.
Adam Stott:
Absolutely. Look, I think it’s been amazing to have a chat with you. You’ve really deserve the award that you have. You’ve been great at the event so far. It’s been real pleasure to work with you and your family and you know, helping you drive this business forward helping you with the motivation and helping you get new results. We’ve loved it. And you know, it’s been great to have you here. How can people get in contact with you for the future? If they want an airport transfer, they want to check out your business.
